"Replaced the power steering gear box and aligned the front end on a 1985 Ford F-350 longbed dually pickup truck. Thoroughly inspected the rest of the vehicle. I phoned them yesterday to check if they could handle a steering play problem on a vehicle of this age and size. David said that they'd have time to do it in the morning, and that it might or might not need a new gear box. They got started on it right when I got there, and amazingly they were able to get a rebuilt gearbox within an hour of the decision to replace it. Ford makes loads of the F-150's, but fewer and fewer of the heavier duty higher model numbers, so I'm accustomed to parts being hard to get, especially on a 25-year-old 350. I get the feeling that most of the employees have been there a long time, and it's generally a happy place to work. They're certainly thorough and careful. I saw one of them torquing lug nuts in the proper diagonal pattern rather than the quick once-around. The guy working on my truck added just a teeny tad more fluid to the power steering to get it exactly right. They know what they're doing, and they care about doing it right. Oh, and the truck is a lot more comfortable to drive now that the steering isn't loose. The actual shop has a kind of New York/Chicago feel to it. Instead of being mostly outdoors, their building covers the entire lot, and you drive in through one single-lane door. This will be especially nice when it rains.
